Forecast Betting Explained

Maybe you have heard before about forecast betting because it’s a highly popular choice among bettors, but do you know the secrets of it? You’ll learn everything from the types of forecast bets, examples, to the pros and cons of forecast betting. It will be thoroughly explained to you, so your chances of winning your next bet will skyrocket.

So how does forecast betting work?

What Is Forecast Betting?

To start with the basics – what is forecast betting? It’s a type of bet where you guess which participants will finish the game in which order. It’s common in horse racing and greyhounds betting and the whole point is to guess the exact order of participants. For example, forecast betting in horse racing is based on betting on which horse will finish the race as the winner and which horse will come second.

It’s rather simple for you – choose a race, predict who will finish first and second and collect your payout. However, there are some tips and tricks that will increase your chances of winning a bet and making a greater profit. So read carefully to not miss out on any important insight!

Types of Forecast Bets

In the example above, forecast betting is explained in simple words. This type of forecast bet is called straight forecast and it’s rather easy to comprehend. However, things get a little tricky when reverse forecast comes into play.

So what is the reverse forecast?

This type of forecast betting allows you to have more freedom when placing a bet. You don’t have to predict who will finish first and who will finish second in that exact order. Instead, you can choose 2 participants you think will be in the top two. What does this mean?

  • You avoid frustration – speaking of forecast betting in horse racing, if you guess which 2 horses are favorites and they come first and second, you still win, without depending on guessing the exact winner.
  • Reverse forecast costs two times more than straight forecast, but you are much more likely to win.
  • You will have a much greater payout than betting simply on the winner.
  • It’s a good idea to place this bet if you have more than one favourite because you don’t have to stress about who will actually win, as long as they both finish first and second.

Keep in mind that in most cases you get the chance to predict the order of 2 or 3 participants. It increases odds greatly, so you can win really big. There is a possibility to predict the order of more than 3 participants and we’ll talk about it in more detail when we introduce combination bets.

Let’s get to the more complex types of forecast betting:

  • Tricast
  • Combination bets

The name is pretty self-explanatory, but there is something you need to know. As we have said, often you can predict the order of up to 3 participants. Odds are going through the roof if you choose this one, but be careful since you have to guess the exact position of each participant!

Combination bets are commonly used when you have more than 2 favourites and you are pretty sure those will do great. However, you are not sure who will be better, so you want to minimise the risk. In horse racing, this bet allows you to predict the exact finishing order of more than 3 horses! This number usually goes up to 6 horses, which gives you an amazing opportunity to win a big bet. Combination bets can work as a tricast reverse forecast where you win as long as you guess the top 3 horses. The order is not important here, you win anyway!

What’s the math behind combination bets? If you have four picks to cover every potential outcome, you will have to place 24 bets. If you have 5 picks, the number of bets is 60. When it comes to 6 picks, the potential outcomes that need to be covered grows to 120 bets.

Hopefully, you now better understand the basics of forecast betting. Let’s move on to some examples in order to give you a bigger picture.

Forecast Betting Examples

Examples are a great way to see if you have learned the art of forecast betting.

  1. Straight forecast in horse racing.

Imagine this situation. There are horse A and horse B. You are sure horse A will finish first and horse B will finish second. The next step is to place a bet with a $5 stake. The total price of this bet will be $5. To win the bet, horse A has to win and horse B has to come right behind horse A.

  1. Reverse Forecast.

You have 2 favourites, but you are not sure which one will do better. The logical step is to place a reverse forecast bet on those 2 horses. So now horse A and horse B can finish in any order, as long as they are in the top two. You win regardless of which of those two horses wins the race! To place this bet, you have a $5 stake, but the cost of this bet is doubled ($10). That’s because you actually place two bets and have higher chances of winning!

How does forecast betting work in real life? The step-by-step process explained:

  1. Choose the sport you want to bet on.
  2. Among races, choose the one that suits you best.
  3. Analyse participants, their previous results and current form.
  4. Choose two or more participants and place them on your betting slip.
  5. Choose the best option for you: reverse forecast, straight forecast, tricast, or combination bet.
  6. Wait for the results, we are rooting for you!

Pros and Cons of Forecast Betting

It’s already hard to guess the winner of a race, let alone first and the second place in that exact order. It may turn out as mission impossible, which is the biggest con of forecast betting. However, you can always increase your chances of winning by placing a reverse forecast bet.

The other thing you need to keep in mind is that you don’t know the potential amount you are going to win. Payouts are calculated after the race is finished, so avoid placing a reverse forecast bet on short-odds participants since the profit can be rather disappointing.

On the other hand, forecast betting is so much fun! It gives you an enormous amount of excitement and endless opportunities for betting.

When speaking of forecast betting in horse racing, the more horses you have, it’s harder to predict the outcome. However, if it happens that you actually guess it – you probably won’t have to work a day in your life anymore.

Sports with Forecast Bets

We have mentioned forecast betting in horse racing the most, but that’s not the only sport you can place a forecast bet in. This betting type is rather popular in horse racing, but you can also try out forecast betting in:

  1. Greyhound betting
  2. Football
  3. Motor Racing

Greyhound racing works pretty similarly to horse racing. Some people argue that greyhounds are better for forecast betting when compared to horse racing. Why? The number of greyhounds is always the same – six. Therefore, it makes it easier to guess if compared to horse racing with the possibility of dozens of horses running.

Football is probably not the first sport that comes to mind when speaking about forecast betting, but it can turn out to be pretty amazing. Obviously, you can’t place a forecast bet on any match you would like, but league winners and cup winners are a great start. What can you do? Predict who will win the league or the cup and who will finish runners-up. Odds can be high, especially if you place a bet pre-season. The payouts can be enormous if you win!

Motor racing is also extremely popular among people who love forecast betting. For example, Formula 1 can be a good start for beginners. Even though it has 20 participants, those who actually have a chance of achieving great results there are usually just a few. That gives you the opportunity to have high odds and a great payout, yet with minimal risk!
