Match Preview

After so many postponements, finally, PSL is entering the final stages of its 2021 season. In the first eliminator, Islamabad United will compete against Multan Sultans for direct entry into the season finale. The team losing this qualifier will get a second chance to qualify for the finals by participating in eliminator 2.

Islamabad United topped the table after the group stage with 16 points – 6 points ahead of Multan Sultans at second place. Whereas, Multan Sultans are getting to play the qualifier based on the higher net run rate they have achieved compared to the other teams in the playoffs. It’s going to be interesting to see if they can push their luck against the table toppers for a direct entry in the finals of PSL 2021.

Islamabad United Preview

The two-time champions Islamabad United have had a great run in this season where they managed to top the table after 10 league matches. They did not start the season well though. In the first 5 games, they managed just 6 points with 3 wins. However, they managed 5 consecutive wins in the next 5 matches to top the table 6 points ahead of the Sultans at the second position.

The opening pair of Usman Khawaja and Colin Munro is doing wonders in the absence of the regular opener Alex hales. In their second match against Peshawar Zalmi, Islamabad United managed to put their highest score for this season on the board. Thanks to the opening pair of Khawaja and Munro who put on a partnership of 98 runs in 10 overs and then Khawaja continued to score a century and help Islamabad United score 247 in the process for the loss of just 2 wickets. United one that match by 15 runs.

They have chased some high scores like the 190 against Karachi Kings and defended the low totals such as 152 against Lahore Qalandars on their way to the top of the table. The middle-order is working well and bowlers have performed when it mattered the most.

Hasan Ali and Mohammad Wasim are in good form. Ali has 12 wickets in the last 8 games while Wasim has managed 11 in the last 9 games. Both have a pretty good economy as well. Overall, Islamabad united looks good to go an inch closer to their 3rd PSL title.

Multan Sultans Preview

After struggling for most of the first half of the PSL 2021, it’s been quite a turnaround for the Multan Sultans to reach the second spot in the table and be able to feature in the first qualifier. The Sultans had won just two games from the first 6 they played in this season. However, they managed 3 wins in the last 4 games with good margins to reach 10 points but more importantly featured 2nd on the points table which will offer them two chances to reach the final.

Despite being 6 points lower compared to the table-toppers Islamabad United, the Multan Sultans have a better run rate than any other team in this PSL. This is due to their huge wins against Lahore Qalandars – by 80 runs defending 169 and against Quetta Gladiators – by 110 runs defending 183. Multan Sultans played their last league match against Islamabad United and failed to beat them the second time in this season.

For Sultans, captain Mohammad Rizwan is in great form with 470 runs in the last 10 matches with an average of above 50 runs per innings and quite a handy strike rate of above 130. Sohaib Maqsood has played some good hands as well. He averages 38 in the last 10 matches and has scored 304 with a superb strike rate of close to 155. In bowling, Shahnawaz Dahani has hit the for at the right moment. He has 20 wickets in the last 9 matches and he will be the key to Sultans’ success in this qualifier.

Sohaib Maqsood 10 304 38.00

Venue

The first qualifier will be hosted at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi which has a capacity to host 20000 people. This is an international standards venue and has hosted many international matches in the past.

Toss Info

In the last 5 matches at this venue in this season of PSL, the teams batting first have won the game 4 times. The team batting first gets some assistance while defending the target. Thus, the team winning the toss should look to bat first here.

Pitch and Weather Report

The weather will be hazy and hot in Abu Dhabi for the PSL qualifier although not much humidity is expected. The temperature will be in the range of 30°C-45°C. Hot Day indeed.

Our Prediction

It’s a great matchup between the top two teams of PSL 2021. Islamabad United have gained momentum by winning their last matches on a trot while the Sultans aren’t far behind with 3 wins in the last 4 games. Islamabad United look in better shape compared to the Sultans, moreover, they have already beaten Sultans twice in this season.

Thus, we predict Islamabad United will beat Multan Sultans in the Qualifier.
