Virat Kohli: Seven Double Centuries by King Kohli

For the first five years that Virat Kohli played in the Test series, he was unable to make any double centuries. However, in the last five years, the player has scored seven double centuries, including six at home ground and one on the international field. In mid-2016, Kohli made his first double century against the West Indies. And just by the end of the year 2017, he had six double centuries added to his records. Kohli’s form seemed like he had cracked the match of scoring double centuries in the Test series. In the seven series of his double centuries, he won five Man of the Match awards as well. In this article, we will highlight Virat Kohli’s 200 runs in the course of his career.

#1 In 2016 Against West Indies in Antigua

The first double century of Virat Kohli was made in 2016 against the West Indies. It was the first match of the 4-match Test series played in Antigua. In fact, it was the first double century an Indian captain scored on an international ground.

India won the toss and opted to bat first. After the fall of the second wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara in the 28th over, it was Kohli’s time to create magic on the ground. Virat made a 100 with his partnership with Shikhar Dhawan. The captain scored another fifty with Ajinkya Rahane.

In the 134th ball, the player scored his century, which followed a tea break. On Day 2, he started at 143 and played excellently to register his double century in a total of 284 balls. He was bowled out by Gabriel on the 200th, with the team declaring their first innings on 566. Eventually, India won the Test by an innings

#2 In 2016 Against New Zealand in Indore

It was the first Virat Kohli’s double century made on the home ground. He scored 200 in the third and the final match of the Test series against New Zealand. Choosing to bat first, Virat came to the crease prior to lunch with the team score of 60 for 2. Post the wicket of Pujara with the team score of 100, Virat Kohli partnered with Rahane and completed his century before concluding Day 1.

He started the day on 103 and accelerated to 150 in 273 balls. He hit his 200 in 347 balls in the noon session. The captain was out on 211, and the team’s score stood at 465. After declaring the first innings at 557 for 5, India eventually won the series by 321 runs.

#3 In 2016 Against England in Mumbai

In December 2016, Kohli went on to make his third double century. It was the fourth Test of the series against England. India started off their innings with confidence after bowling out England for 400. On Day 3, Kohli decided to bat early. Post the tea session, he hit the century and wrapped up the day on a score of 147.

Furthermore, on Day 4, Virat Kohli played fiercely to reach 200 of 302 balls in the first session. After scoring 235, he was bowled out by Chris Woakers, attempting the ante. India closed their innings on 631 and won the Test by 36 runs. After Virat Kohli’s double century, he was declared the Man of the Match for the first time.

#4 In 2017 Against Bangladesh in Hyderabad

Among all Virat Kohli’s double centuries, his 200 against Bangladesh in February 2017 was record-breaking for the player. This is because with this double century, he became the only player in history to score four consecutive 200+ scores in Test series, breaking the record of Rahul Dravid and Sir Donald Bradman. India chose to bat first, and Virat Kohli entered the field when the team scored 180 for 2. He left the field when the score of India stood at 465. And during his time, he made 204 runs off 246 balls that included 24 fours. The team declared the innings on 687 for six and won the Test series by 208 runs. Additionally, Kohli was also recognised as the Man of the Match.

#5 In 2017 Against Sri Lanka in Nagpur

The fifth double century of Virat Kohli occurred on the second Test day of the three-day match series against Sri Lanka in Nagpur in November 2017. India bowled Sri Lanka out for a score of 205; the team started its innings closer to Day one’s end. Kohli came to bat post the team break on day two with India’s score of 216. The player completed his 100 in the first session of Day 3 and hit his double century after the tea session in 259 balls. There were 15 fours and two sixes as well. India finished their innings on 610 for six and won the Test by 239 runs and an innings. In this series also, he was named the Man of the Match.

#6 In 2017 Against Sri Lanka in Delhi

The sixth double century of Virat Kohli came in the next Test series against Sri Lanka, which occurred in Delhi. India won the toss and chose to bat first; the team collected 536 runs for seven and declared the first innings.

Kohli came in prior to lunch break and went back around the tea break on the second day. He scored 243 runs of merely 287 balls that included 25 fours during his time on the field. He was LBW-ed by Sandakan. The Test series was drawn, and it was the first time India didn’t win a series after a double century from Kohli. But he was still the Man of the Match.

#7 In 2019 Against South Africa in Pune

After 2017, Kohli did not score one for around two years. His seventh and last double century was against South Africa in Pune. In 2019, in the second Test of a three-match Test series, Kohli started off with a strong foundation of 163 runs. By the end of day one, Kohli scored 63. After the tea session on the second day, the player completed his double century with 295 balls.
